How Much Margin Capital Required to Trade 1 lot of Nifty Future

Nifty future is very popular among traders, many newbies want to learn to trade nifty future. But one that hits most in mind of a new trader, it is what is capital required to trade nifty future. Though capital requirement will be as low as 8% for the index such as Bank nifty future and Nifty future.

Margins for Nifty Future:

Margin actually varies from broker to broker. While most of the stockbrokers will ask you Rs.1,55,000 for 1 lot (75 shares) to open a positional trade in nifty future.

If you are an intraday trader then you will require 50% only Rs. 80,000 to trade 1 lot of nifty future (using bracket order/cover order). But positions must be squared off on the trading day itself or it will be squared off at 3:20 pm by RMS of your stockbroker.

Even though the margin requirement is low for trading nifty future, but it is always advisable to have at least Rs. 2,00,000 in your trading account. Do not over-leverage your trades as this can kill your trading career.

Margins for Nifty Option Writing:

For nifty option writing, you will need a margin of Rs.1,55,000 for carrying position for the next day. For writing options on expiry day, intraday margins are as low as Rs.80,000 per lot on nifty options.

This margin is for naked option selling, but if we hedge positions then the same margin can go down to as low as Rs.18,000 per lot.

NOTE: W.E.F 1 September 2021, new positions in F&O will attract a 100% margin for intraday trading. Positional margins remain the same. So if you do intraday trade then margins will be the same as that of positional margins.
